Now that it's over, apart from the bioart, I miss these things:

Hilarious evenings with dynamic people like these... I swear they were truly funny, these facial expressions wouldn't necessarily make you believe it, but they were.

It's funny being back now and having tons of people implore me about what Bioartcamp was like. It's very difficult to sum up, but I think I always leave them envious, and with good reason. This summer adventure was an amazing learning experience and helped give rise to a pretty fascinating community. The radio doc is on hiatus for the moment but will be up and in production shortly. More to come on that front.

Davee D's BioARTCAMP Experience

On my flight into Banff I was quite nervous about spending 2 weeks with people I had never met before and this feeling continued until we had our first meeting where within 5 minutes I knew that BioARTCAMP was the place for me. The team members were open, kind, friendly and most importantly hilarious.  We were then going over the details of what was to come once we reached Castle Mountain Hostel, and we were all excited to get down to work, BioArtWork that is.

Once at the hostel we set about creating the unique labs in the woods of Banff National Park, we had some ups (all the delicious foods, good company and beer) and downs (the rain, the ever shrinking tent and the late Tetrahymena) but through out that everyone worked together to create a great environment for art, science, philosophy and most importantly innovation.

I had the opportunity to help collect samples, examine Tetrahymena, extract DNA, take/edit photographs, sing BioARTCAMP songs and invite the public to come an see what our team had achieved in just a few days, overall I had an amazing life changing experience and I thank Jennifer Willet and the rest of the BioARTCAMP team!

Lions, and Tigers, and Bears, Oh MY!

Tokio and I did a walk through at the site today. We brought in an electrician to give us a consultation about the power needs of the project. Mainly we learned that we cannot plug in everything at once, and the microwave and kettle have the most draw. Then we had a chit chat with Tony the hostel manager about rules, and wildlife. He told us that he has seen two grizzlies in the site over the last two weeks, and then on the way home we came across a series of wolf warning signs - We aren't in Kansas anymore, Toto!

BioARTCAMP goes Live!

BioARTCAMP is a hybrid workshop/symposium/performance event where artists, scientists, theorists, filmmakers and students will work together to build a portable laboratory in Banff National Park. Participants will contribute to the general construction of an art/science field research station at Castel Mountain, an off site and outdoors location. A variety of collaborative art actions and projects will be conducted in the outdoor laboratory. Senior Artists will present bioartworks within a camping/laboratory context at a public art/science fair event hosted live at the Castle Mountain location. The two-week residency will conclude at The Banff Centre with a symposium and panel discussion including all participants.


BioARTCAMP is hosted by Dr. Jennifer Willet from INCUBATOR Lab at The University of Windsor, Canada.
